Job Summary
The Pipe Layer is the senior member of the utility pipe installation crew, responsible for the precise and safe placement of underground pipes. You are an expert in pipe alignment, grade control, and proper connection methods for various pipe materials. You oversee the work of the Pipe Technicians, directing their tasks and ensuring adherence to project specifications and safety regulations. The Pipe Layer interprets construction plans, sets grade stakes, and verifies pipe elevations, guaranteeing accurate installation. You are also responsible for maintaining a safe work environment within the trench, ensuring proper shoring and excavation procedures are followed. Your expertise in pipe fitting and connection techniques is crucial for preventing leaks and ensuring the long-term integrity of the utility system. The Pipe Layer’s experience and leadership are essential for the efficient and successful completion of underground pipe projects.

Pay Range
$25.00 per hour
As a Utility Pipe Layer, you’ll play a key role in upgrading underground infrastructure. Install fire hydrants, gate valves, water mains, and general water services. We also lower or raise existing manholes to match the grade. From within the ditch, you’ll ensure pipes are laid precisely, maintain grade accuracy for our operators, and seamlessly connect each pipe to its neighbor.
Pipe Installation
- Work in the ditch to install pipes according to project specifications.
- Know and practice proper trench safety protocols.
- Collaborate with equipment operators to maneuver pipes into place.
Pipe Preparation
- Clean pipe bells and ensure they’re free from debris and obstructions.
- Apply lubricant as needed to facilitate smooth connections and prevent friction.
- Use tools like lasers and levels to monitor pipe alignment and grade.
Guidance and Belling
- Guide pipes into the ditch as equipment operators lower them down.
- Properly bell the pipes for secure, watertight connection.
Technical & Hard Skills
- Blueprint Reading: Understanding construction drawings, site plans, and utility layouts to determine precise pipe routes and depths.
- Grade and Slope Calculation: Using Transit Levels and pipe-laying lasers to verify correct vertical and horizontal alignment so water flows properly.
- Trenching and Shoring: Knowing excavation safety rules, proper trench support systems, and confined space protocols to prevent cave-ins.
- Pipe Connection Methods: Joining and sealing various pipe materials (such as PVC, concrete, or ductile iron) using welding, cement, gaskets, or bolting to prevent leaks.
- Equipment Operation: Safely handling small power tools (pipe saws, jackhammers, tampers) and working alongside heavy machinery operators (excavators and loaders). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
