Job Summary

The Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory is seeking an intermediate-level Soils Testing Technician to perform a wide range of laboratory tests on soil materials. This role is hands‑on and includes soil logging, preparation, testing, data review, and supporting quality assurance activities in a controlled laboratory environment. The technician will work both independently and as part of a team to support materials testing for FDOT projects.

Pay Range

$17 per hour

Role and Responsibilities

·       Perform laboratory tests according to prescribed methodologies, including soil preparation, logging, and distribution, soil compaction (AASHTO T 99 and T 180), soil classification (AASHTO T 88), liquid and plastic limits (AASHTO T 89 and T 90), organic content (AASHTO T 267), specific gravity (AASHTO T 100).

·       Analyze and review test results for accuracy, consistency, and compliance with quality assurance standards.

·       Assist with developing and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs), testing protocols, and related laboratory processes.

·       Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and mechanical testing devices.

·       Manage multiple testing tasks while meeting established project turnaround times.

·       Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

Preferred Skills and Capabilities

·       Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office software.

·       Ability to review information for accuracy, consistency, and quality.

·       Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

·       Ability to work independently and collaboratively to meet project goals.

·       Ability to follow verbal instructions and perform tasks quickly and efficiently.

·       Proficiency in troubleshooting and repair of mechanical equipment.

·       Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently under no supervision.

·       Ability to stand for up to 8 hours per day.

·       Ability to carry and lift up to 50 lbs. repetitively.

Ability to work in dusty environments using provided protective equipment, including dust masks, safety glasses, and gloves.
